Vintage fashion and flea market finds

Helsinki has plenty of second-hand shops for those in the know.

Although the vintage fashion trend is not as big in Helsinki as in other European cities at the moment, Helsinki still has a number of excellent second-hand shops. The following are a selection.

Ansa
Fleminginkatu 8
12–19, Sat 12–16

A beautifully presented and neat second-hand boutique, selling second-hand items currently in fashion. The range includes dresses, blouses, skirts, leather jackets, jewellery, shoes and much more. As a speciality, this shop also carries children’s clothing. It is hard to imagine making a child actually wear red leather shorts with heart-shaped pockets, but they did look extremely cute. Perhaps they could be used as a decorative item?

Helsinki 10
Eerikinkatu 3
11–20, Sat 11-18

In addition to new designer goods, Helsinki 10 also sells select and trendy second-hand clothing suited to the season, anything from leather jackets to floral dresses. The range of boots on offer is also usually quite good. It is nice to note that this shop carries many great finds for men, too.

Mekkomania
Mannerheimintie 31
A tiny dress shop in a corner of the Pinkki Paplari hair salon. Carefully selected dresses from past decades, particularly from Finnish designers. There is also jewellery, shoes, gloves, bags and a few wedding dresses from the 1970s. Totally irresistible.

Penny Lane Boutique
Runeberginkatu 37
12–17, Sat 12–15

Quality second-hand items and vintage fashion from clothing to accessories. On the first floor, there is a fine selection of vintage ball gowns and formal dresses.

Play it again, Sam
Rauhankatu 2
10.30–18, Sat 11–15

This shop is a legend in its own right by now, and the address is Rauhankatu. The range includes clothing, evening gowns, shoes, bags, hats, wigs, jewellery and corsets. The oldest items may date back to the nineteenth century. The shop also has a corner for men.

Ruuturouva
Fredrikinkatu 16
11–18, in summertime closed on Saturdays

This is a high-quality second-hand shop with a particularly good range of handbags. Also, there are always some brand names on offer, and furs.

Other shops well worth visiting include:
Amado, at Merimiehenkatu 23; Kaunis Veera, at Albertinkatu 10, Hilda Viola Boutique, at Toinen linja 15, and Tuuliatuu, at Snellmaninkatu 25.

Flea markets are, of course, also good places to look for second-hand clothes, accessories and other interesting things: Valtteri, Aleksis Kiven katu 17, UFF shops and Fida charity shops.
