- Helsinki prepares for May Day celebration
-
Vappu, the Finnish May Day celebration, starts on the evening of Monday, 30 April and continues through Tuesday, 1 May. This traditional spring festivity of workers and students brings tens of thousands of people to party in the city centre.
One of the results of the celebration is vast amounts of waste left behind. The City of Helsinki has prepared for the volumes with heavy waste collection equipment. There are 75 units of 3.5-cubic-metre temporary waste containers, as well as other containers and collection points for waste, empty bottles and hot waste from portable grills. There are a large number of portable toilets throughout the city centre and the Kaivopuisto park.
The traditional way to celebrate Vappu is with sparkling wine, much of it consumed in the Kaivopuisto park. There are two bottle collection points in the park. Anyone who returns 20 bottles to the point is rewarded with a free movie ticket.
The Helsinki City Rescue Department is reinforced for Vappu with six voluntary units. The City’s public works staff is reinforced with dozens of outsourced staffers for waste and sanitation management. A special operation is organized for young people in the city centre and other areas, staffed with mostly volunteers and equipped to administer first aid and send those in need to hospitals.
Public transportPublic transport services mostly operate Friday schedules on 30 April and Saturday schedules on 1 May. Buses operate extended schedules on 30 April, the metro runs two hours longer than normal, and local trains operate through the night. More about public transport

- Multilingual webservice for immigrants will be updated
-
The City of Helsinki Cultural Office is reforming Info Bank, the 15-language web service aimed at immigrants. ”We are updating the service to take greater account of the different immigrant groups - those arriving through work, those taking up study, and those with a refugee background - and the different information needs they have”, says Deputy Mayor Tuula Haatainen. The reform is made possible by a five-year agreement concluded between the Government and the municipalities which will result in a threefold increase in web service funding. Financing the service are Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Turku, Tampere, Kuopio, Rovaniemi and Kajaani of the municipalities, with the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry for Employment and the Economy, the Ministry of Education and the Finnish Social Insurance Institution on the part of the Government. It is estimated that by 2025 every fifth metropolitan resident will speak a language other than Finnish or Swedish as mother tongue. ”The agreement means that Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen will also join Info Bank, and link to the Selma web service intended for immigrant workers in the metropolitan area. All these measures will lead to immigrants in the metropolitan area having better opportunities to access information and build a secure foundation for life as a part of Finnish society”, says Deputy Mayor Haatainen. www.infopankki.fi

- Health as street gallery theme
-
The street galleries of Museokatu, Eerikinkatu and Fleminginkatu in Helsinki are based on the idea that fine art should be more visible in public spaces. This year, the common theme of the three street gallery exhibitions is Health. The theme gives a more multidimensional picture of health than the other images – advertisements – in the urban space. What is physical health, what is mental health? What do they mean to people of different ages, to different cultures? When the Western idea of physical health can sometimes gain a position that may even cause stress, it is good to put some perspective to it. Read more...

- Helsinki Region Housing Report 2008
-
An uncertain mood once again prevails on the housing market. The shaky state and outlook of the economy and money markets is holding back demand for housing. Dwelling construction in the Helsinki Region has settled in recent years at a level of about 9,000 completed dwellings annually, which is about one thousand fewer dwellings than at the start of the present decade. This reduction has centred specifically on the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, while dwelling construction has grown continually in the surrounding municipalities. Local authority estimates suggest that construction in the Helsinki Region as a whole will continue to fall to a level of 8,100-8,300 dwellings in both 2008 and 2009. In the present economic climate construction developers have shown renewed interest in building State-subsidised housing. Conditions for dwelling construction will improve substantially with the launch of major new housing estates at Kalasatama and Jätkäsaari following completion of the new harbour development at Vuosaari in Helsinki. - The Port of Helsinki to discontinue charging wastewater fees
-
Starting next year, the Port of Helsinki will no longer charge a wastewater fee for wastewater left by ships in the port sewer system. This change is a continuation of the Port of Helsinki’s efforts to reduce loading in the Baltic Sea. Wastewater fees were discontinued for international cruise ships on a trial basis in the summer of 2008 and the trial will now become standard practice for all vessels. In the summer of 2007, the mayors of Helsinki and Turku committed themselves to saving the Baltic Sea and presented a challenge to hundreds of other actors for improvement to the state of the sea. The measures presented in the commitment concerning the Baltic Sea initiative aim at reducing the pollutant loading of the water body caused by the activities of the cities. One of the goals in the City of Helsinki’s action plan is to reduce the environmental impact of ship traffic.

- New quays for cruise traffic at West Harbour
-
With cargo port operations ending at West Harbour, the Melkinlaituri and Valtamerilaituri quays are free to be used for the needs of cruise ship traffic. The waterlines at the quays will be readjusted and a sewage system will be built for pumping ships’g rey wastewater. There are preliminary plans for some 22 cruise ship visits at the Valtamerilaituri and Melkinlaituri quays in the summer of 2009. The transfer of these quays to use by cruise ships creates considerable additional capacity and a competitive advantage in order to attract mega-class cruise liners to Helsinki.

The Night of the Arts will be held in Helsinki for the 23rd time on Friday, 26 August, as part of Helsinki Festival. Helsinki residents and visitors will have the chance to discover art and culture in new places and in new ways. The night allows people to move from one atmosphere to another. The events are free of charge. The core of the night’s programme is made up of events at museums, galleries, bookshops, cultural centres and art boutiques. The Suvilahti cultural centre offers circus, the Korjaamo art factory features wannabe ballerinas, and the Cable Factory organizes a major wall painting event.
A large number of events will be organized on squares and streets and in parks. Malminkatu becomes an art street, Parliament House’s park sets the stage for a political installation, and Tähtitorninmäki becomes the scene for a reading of Saima Harmaja’s poetry.
The Night of the Arts spreads from the city centre to suburbs. For example, the City of Helsinki Cultural Office’s Malmitalo, Vuotalo, Stoa and Kanneltalo organize programmes for visitors of all ages.
Six city art works will be revealed. Water-themed short films are shown at the Swimming Stadium, hydrophones turn the Kamppi fountain into an instrument, live animations are screened on the Ateneum art museum’s façade, and the trees take on a new life with masks and mirrors in Viikki.
The journey towards the Night of the Arts will begin on 19 August with Animals Visiting the City, a project where South African artist Roger Titley and Airan Berg from Israel bring to life the beasts of Finland’s forests. Free public workshops are run across the city, with anyone and everyone welcome to take part. The project culminates in an open air procession on the Night of the Arts.
Helsinki Festival’s main partner in the Night of the Arts is the Helsinki daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

- The 2009 tourist year the third best in Helsinki
-
The tourist year is on the way of becoming the third best of the decade in Helsinki. By the end of October 2009 the total number of overnight stays hade decreased by six per cent in comparison with the number at the same point of time last year. The number of foreign overnight stays had decreased by eleven per cent and the number of resident overnight stays hade increased by a half per cent. If the number of overnight stays is used as the criterion, 2008 och 2007 are the best tourist years in Helsinki during the decade that is drawing to a close.
The Russian tourists were three per cent fewer in January–October 2009 than during the same period last year, but we are expecting that a great number of Russian tourists will come to Hel-sinki to celebrate the New Year. Last December–January some 70,000 Russian overnight stay-s were registered in hotels and other places offering accomodation in Helsinki.

- Season of Light to brighten Helsinki in early January
-
Helsinki will celebrate the beginning of the year 2010 with two light-art installations by Mikki Kunttu in the Season of Light event.
These installations will shroud both the Senate Square and the Parliament House in a multitude of colours, turning the Helsinki city centre into a scene of a bright event that contrasts with the darkest season of the year.
At the Senate Square, “Reflections” will be a journey to the past and fantasy. The square and its surrounding buildings will return to 1852, when St. Nicholas’ Church (today Helsinki Cathedral) was inaugurated. History blending with fantasy, vines will grow on the cathedral’s pillars, and the cathedral walls will be the backdrop to an interplay of lights, colours, shadows and textures. The visual effects will be accompanied and enhanced by sound effects created by composer and sound designer Kasperi Laine.
“Oratoribus” at the Parliament House will highlight the timeless and venerable character of the building, exploring its details and accentuating the building’s special place in the Finnish psyche.
Reflections and Oratoribus will debut on Friday, January 1, 2010 at 8 pm (20:00). On subse-quent days through January 6, Reflections will play at 30-minute intervals from 5 pm to 11 pm (17:00-23:00) and Oratoribus nonstop from 4 pm to 9 am (16:00-9:00).
The Season of Light pays close attention to energy consumption, primarily making use of the energy efficient LED technology. With the event, Helsinki seeks to become the city of light of the Baltic region.
The Season of Light is organized by the City of Helsinki in cooperation with Helsinki’s Energy company Helsingin Energia. More at http://www.seasonoflight.fi
