Learned societies - the support network for researchers
The network involves 235 member societies and more than 200,000 individual scholars and scientists.
Learned societies have served as a significant network between scientists and scholars since the 18th century. The role of the learned societies has over the years come to be a supplement to university education and to contribute to and diversify scientific research and debate.
The activities of learned societies include the exchange of international publications, facilitating researchers - international contacts, and providing information on research findings to the general public. Learned societies organise hundreds of meetings and conferences every year.
The Federation of Finnish Learned Societies is the national co-operative body for learned societies in Finland.
The Federation has 235 member societies representing different disciplines, totalling more than 200,000 individual members.
The Tieteessä tapahtuu (Science Now) periodical is one of the key channels for the activities of the societies. The Finnish-language online version of the periodical can be viewed via the Federation's website.
