Zodiak presents: Die Unheimliche Freundin
Choreographer Liisa Pentti explores the theme and experience of unfamiliarity in her new group work Die Unheimliche Freundin.
Premiere 22.8.2007 19:00 Zodiak
"Unheimlich" (uncanny) is the strange, unknown and undefined part inside us that words cannot fully describe.
Our 21st century world emphasises visual experiences and rational logic, yet reality is also perceived more multilayered than ever. Science tries to rationalize the world we live in, yet the hidden and uncanny strangeness inside of us remains.
Die Unheimliche Freundin operates on the borders of mystery and humour. The work is part of the Helsinki Festival programming.
Liisa Pentti's choreography consists of short intertwining scenes with unordinary movement material. The visual
world is built around illusions created with lights and scenography. The work has been inspired by Freud's 1919
essay Das Unheimliche and by American artist Robert Longo's The Freud Drawings from 2000-2002. Visual design is created by scenographer Simon Le Roux.
Liisa Pentti is a central Finnish choreographer who has made an impact on the Finnish dance scene since 1986. In her work, movemental and emotional elements are combined to create narrative choreographies. Her style can best be described as postmodern romanticism. Liisa Pentti's recent works, including 1-0, matériel du coeur (Zodiak 2005) and Travel (2006), have been performed both in Finland and abroad (e.g. Germany, Estonia, Lithuania). Liisa Pentti is Zodiak's house-choreographer for 2007-09.
