The Real Citizen on display at Hakasalmi Villa
The exhibition throws light on how the attributes of good citizenship have changed at different times.
01/2007
The elegant Hakasalmi Villa is one of the branches of the Helsinki City Museum putting on interesting theme exhibitions. Now there is an exhibition titled "The Real Citizen", examining how the concept of modern citizenship has arisen and developed from the 19th century to the present day in Helsinki.
The exhibition throws light on how the attributes of good citizenship have changed at different times and varied according to gender and social status. It also shows how difficult it has been for citizens to fulfil the demands of society on its members. No one right answer is given to the question, what the real citizen is like; instead the exhibition makes the visitors contemplate their own view about this controversial issue.
Those who want to find out whether they deserve to be called real citizens or not may take a civil merit test at the address www.realcitizen.info. The test is an international online exhibition in the form of a game.
The exhibition will be on until June 15, 2008. Various programmes and events are arranged to complement the exhibition. In January 2007 on display is a pictorial report on "Turmiolan Tommi" from the year 1858. The Finnish temperance movement introduced him as a warning example of a man abusing alcohol.
