Italian Nights – “Le Notti italiane”
The special exhibition Le Notti italiane at the Sinebrychoff Art Museum in autumn 2008 presents unique dresses and accessories by top Italian designers. The fabulous creations of the world’s leading fashion artists will be on display till December 28.
The Italian Nights exhibition at the Sinebrychoff Art Museum shows that Italia’s reputation as a mecca for fashion is undeniable.
Since the Middle Ages Italia has been famous for the high-quality made-to-measure clothes and still today the leading Italian fashion houses maintain old handicraft traditions and use luxury fabrics when tailoring their dresses.
The exhibition contains Italian haute couture or “alta moda” creations from 1950’s to 1990’s. On display are unique dresses, bags, shoes and belts by 18 fashion designers. A special attention in the exhibition has been paid to the creations of Roberto Capucci, Valentino and Versace.
Roberto Capucci (born. 1930) is the child prodigy of the Italian fashion: he has been referred to as the “Michelangelo of clothing” for having created unusual, sculpted dresses that often follow the forms of the body.
Valentino (Clemente Ludovico Garavani, born 1932) is the favourite designer of several world-famous film stars and celebrities. He is known for his special red colour (rosso Valentino), which has been used in the two exhibited evening dresses.
Gianni Versace (1944–1997) learned tailoring skills from his mother, who was a skilled dressmaker. Versace introduced his first clothing collection in 1978. The evening dresses he designed are luxurious and sexy.
Displayed in the exhibition are dresses worn by the famous celebrities such as Princess Diana, Jacqueline Kennedy, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and the popular film stars from the 1950s and 1960s, e.g. Claudia Cardinale, Audrey Hepburn ja Ava Gardner. All the exhibition items are loaned from the Fondazione di Sartirana collection.
