Designer of the Month in Design Forum Shop
Design studio Aivan! wants to question constructively the traditional way of making design. An open-minded, hardworking and international attitude is typical to the group.
September 2008
The design studio Aivan!, founded in 2007 by four young designers, may be better known abroad than in Finland. The designers are Jarkko Jämsén (b. 1975), Antti Mäkelä (b. 1980), Mikael Silvanto (b. 1980) and Saku Sysiö (b. 1980). The company came into existence from shared ambitions and a desire to making design an interesting profession.
Aivan! wants to question constructively the traditional way of making design. An open-minded, hardworking and international attitude is typical to the group. The aim is to provide new solutions, not make up new problems. The commissions may only be bigger than the usual – the company has, among other things, designed custom-built yachts from the keel up to the tip of the mast. The scale is large, the service personal and challenges are welcome.
The FM/AM radio is a good example of the group's design principles. It is an interpretation of what is fundamental in the essence and functions of a radio. The shape resembling measuring equipment amuses but also brings out everything that is needed.
Designer of the Month is a Design Forum Shop campaign that will bring out 12 young and talented Finnish designers during the year.
