Shoes combining street cred and classical skills – that is the secret of Janne Lax's shoe brand St. Vacant. Lax (b. 1975) started his career as a shoe designer with an apprenticeship in a company making custom-made shoes. He became interested in shoemaking, started to study it and after a few years the time was right for and own company and collection. That was in 2005. In a couple of years the relaxed but stylish footwear for both men and women had found it users – and the shoes were surprisingly worn even with business clothing.
St. Vacant shoes combine the traditions of shoemaking and high-quality craft with unorthodox cuts and material and colour combinations, laced with a hint of weirdness, even sci-fi. The fast rhythm of the city life can be distinguished in the background.
This autumn's novelty is spats that can be fixed on a shoe, an old idea found and remodelled by Lax. Inventive details in fastening make the spats easy to wear. Bags are also included in future plans.
Designer of the Month is a Design Forum Shop campaign that will bring out 12 young and talented Finnish designers during the year.
