Helsingin kaupungin liikelaitos ajaa perinteisiä ruusuisia ratikkakierroksia äitienpäivänä sunnuntaina 8.5. Ruusuja äideille jaetaan Kulttuuriratikassa, joka kiertää Töölönlahden ympäri neljä kertaa klo 11–14 alkaen. Ratikka myös pysähtyy Kauppatorilla, jossa kuljettajat jakavat äideille ruusuja.Ruusuratikassa on matkustajien iloksi tarjolla musiikkia naissolistien esittämänä. Laura Sippola esiintyy kello 11.25 Kauppatorilta Töölön hallille päin ja Suvi Isotalo vastaavasti kello 13.25.
Ratikan reitti on Töölön halli–Mannerheimintie–Aleksanterinkatu–Kauppatori– Snellmaninkatu–Hakaniemi–Kallio–Urheilutalo–Ooppera–Runeberginkatu–Töölön halli. Ruusuratikka lähtee kierrokselleen Töölön hallilta aina tasatunnein.Kyytiin pääsee maksutta kaikilta pysäkeiltä. Ruusuratikka toteutetaan yhteistyössä Kulttuuritehdas Korjaamon kanssa. Vaunun tunnistaa hopeahohtoisesta ulkokuoresta ja linjakilvestä Ruusuratikka/Rosenvagn.

The best way to get around in the Metropolitan area is to use public transport. The trams, metro, buses, local trains and Suomenlinna ferry will take you to all places of interest. You are entitled to a 50% student discount if you study in Finland for a degree and are a registered resident to the municipality of Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, Kauniainen, Kirkkonummi or Kerava. Exchange students and trainees do not get any discount on public transportation.

- Twin schools have been selected

YTV and Kierrätyskeskus have chosen eight schools for the twin school program for school year 2009-2010. YTV has already been offering free of charge environmental education for primary schools, within a twin school project, for the last three years.
The Environmental School of The Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre Ltd puts into a complex idea practise, which offers training for teachers as well as classes and teaching materials. Through games, exercises and arts and crafts, the pupils are informed on such issues as the waste prevention at source and moderate consumption. The children familiarise themselves with sustainable consumption habits and learn to put the newly gained knowledge into practise in their every-day life. The City of Helsinki’s upper secondary schools for adults will undergo changes at the beginning of August. Next autumn there will be one Finnish-language upper secondary school for adults and one Swedish-language upper secondary programme for adults.
On 1 August, the Helsinki, Itäkeskus and Mäkelänrinne Upper Secondary Schools for Adults will merge administratively into a single upper secondary school for adults. In addition to the present locations, the new unit will have service points in the downtown area, Vallila, Käpylä and Itäkeskus.
The Swedish-language Aftis Upper Secondary School for Adults will also see changes. On 1 August, Helsingfors Aftongymnasium (Helsinki Upper Secondary School for Adults) will merge with the present Tölö gymnasium (upper secondary school). An adult studies programme will be established at the resulting Tölö specialiseringsgymnasium (upper secondary school with a special education task), and it will operate at Sandelsgatan 3 in Töölö. Starting next autumn, the renamed upper secondary school and adult studies programme will be located in the Sandels Cultural Centre building.Further information about the changes caused by the merger and the new Finnish-language name of the upper secondary school for adults will be provided later in the spring.

The ”Summer holiday and friends 2009” brochure published by the Helsinki School Children Summer Camp Association (Hekolo ry) has been published and distributed to homes via the lower stage of Helsinki’s comprehensive schools. The brochure provides information about the camps organised for children for classes 1-7 this summer. Applications are being accepted from now until 2nd March.
Multi-cultural day camps are being held at the Wikström Villa on Vuosaari.The experience from last summer’s camps was positive. Pupils from classes 1-6 are welcome to take part. The activities in the camps include sports, games, handicrafts, music, swimming, boating and having fun doing all the things that are part of a great summer camp. Breakfast, lunch and a snack will be provided at the camps.

- Next Gate presents the training opportunities after comprehensive school

The City of Helsinki Education Department is organising the Next Gate exhibition in November which will present the training opportunities available after comprehensive school. The City of Helsinki’s vocational educational institutions Helpa, Hesote and Heltech as well as the Swedish language educational institution Prakticum, all of the city’s Upper Secondary Schools as well as many other Upper Secondary Schools and the Education Department’s Apprenticeship Training office will be exhibiting at the exhibition at Wanha Satama. All pupils from classes 8 - 10 in Helsinki’s comprehensive schools along with their directors of studies or teachers are invited to the exhibition. New Helsinki city school and vocational institute school boards will be elected to serve 2009-2012. During the autumn, schools will hold parent/guardian meetings, at which candidates for the board are nominated. The Education Committee’s Finnish and Swedish Divisions will appoint the new boards in February 2009. The board sets the regulations for the school or vocational institute and approves its budget proposal. The board also submits proposals to the Education Committee’s Finnish and Swedish Divisions on the school curriculum and other education-related plans for the school or vocational institute. Every year, the board approves a plan based on the curricula of the comprehensive school, upper secondary school or adult upper secondary school; annual working times are not included in this plan. The board accepts teachers for service at comprehensive, upper secondary and adult upper secondary schools. Board duties are specified in the Education Department regulations. Read more...

- Autumn joint application period begins 1 October

The autumn joint application period is for students seeking secondary level education placement beginning in 2009. The application period is 1-10 October. Joint applications are submitted electronically. All applications must be submitted to the Finnish National Board of Education by no later than 10 October at 4:15pm. Where applicable, entrance and aptitude examinations as well as language testing will be held 27 October–7 November 2008. Applicants will be notified of the autumn joint application results no earlier than 21 November 2008. Applicants must notify the educational provider that they accept the placement by no later than 5 December 2008.

- Charter of Foundation for Aalto University was Signed

The new university, which will be created through a merger of the Helsinki School of Economics, the University of Art and Design Helsinki, and the Helsinki University of Technology, has been given the name Aalto University on 29 May 2008. Aalto University's special national mission will be to employ research and education to support the success of Finland in the international economy. At the same time, the university will make a positive contribution to Finnish society, its technology, economy, culture and international appeal. The goal for the new university is to be one of the leading institutions in the world in terms of research and education in its own specialised disciplines by 2020. The Aalto University starts operating on 1 August 2009. The capital of the university foundation will be formed by donations of at least e 700 million. This capital will be accumulated in stages during 2008-2010 by a Government donation of e 500 million and donations of at least e 200 million from Finnish industries and other financiers.

The application period for Finnish-speaking tenth forms ends on 5 August 2008 at 2 pm. - The Voice of the Young - the Mayor’s meetings in March

The Voice of the Young in Helsinki operations culminate as usual in the Voice of the Young Mayor’s meetings to be held in March. In the meetings, comprehensive school pupils, high school students and students in vocational institutes decide on school community and school environment projects. This year, schools have for the first time the opportunity of proposing school community projects. The amount of money allocated in the meeting can be used to organise activities that promote students’ communality. The Education Department has earmarked 600.000 euro in their budget for the implementation of project proposals made by children and youth.
The Voice of the Young meetings will be held in the Helsinki City Council meeting room. The representatives of the media are welcome to attend the meetings. Entry through the main entrance of the City Hall, Pohjoisesplanadi 11-13.
