Student benefits
Comprehensive school pupils receive textbooks and other learning materials free of charge.
The books and other materials are selected by the school. Having appropriate sports gear for PE classes is the pupils' own responsibility.
Pupil and student welfare services support students' and pupils' well-being, health and safety, thus creating a favourable learning environment. Pupils have access to the services of the school health care, school psychologists and school social workers.
Student welfare services also include special needs assistance, afternoon care and school meals. According to the Basic Education Act, pupils in the 1st and 2nd forms and special needs pupils in the 1st to 6th form may apply for afternoon care. The afternoon care is provided by the City of Helsinki, parishes, associations and NGOs.
School meals are free. Special dietary requirements as well as various food allergies are taken into account when designing school menus. Many schools offer nutritionally balanced afternoon snacks in the school cafeteria.
Pupils in the 1st-9th forms may receive a subsidy for school transportation costs under certain conditions. As attendance at the local school is prioritised, the subsidy is usually granted only for school transport within the pupil's own area. The travel costs of pupils from outside Helsinki are paid by their home municipalities. All students are insured for the duration of school work and school travel.
Schoolchildren may participate in a summer recreation programme by going to summer camps or by tending a garden allotment; these services are provided by an independent association, Helsingin koululaisten lomavirkistys rt (Holiday association for pupils living in Helsinki).
