Where to find student accommodation?
Student flats are less expensive than flats on the private market and are usually within an easy commute from the schools.
The largest provider of student housing within the Helsinki metropolitan area is the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region (HOAS). Student unions and organisations also provide student flats for their members.
All full-time degree students in post-comprehensive schools and institutions are eligible to apply for HOAS flats. HOAS has approximately 7,700 flats around Helsinki, mainly for shared accommodation and families.
The prices for rooms in shared flats vary according to size and location. Usually the rent is between 200 and 300 euros per month.
Competition for student housing within the metropolitan area can be quite fierce, especially at the beginning of term, so it is advisable to submit your application as soon as you receive confirmation of a study place and to submit it to several housing providers. HOAS gives priority to new students arriving from outside the Helsinki metropolitan area.
Despite the overwhelming number of applications, the autumn peak period is fairly short and usually student housing providers are able to offer housing within a reasonably short time, especially if you are prepared to be flexible in terms of location and furnishings.
If you are lucky, you may also find a rented flat on the private market within the student income range. Costs can be minimised by sharing the flat with friends. It is much easier to find flats with one or two bedrooms and a kitchen in the Helsinki area than it is to find a studio flat.
The Student Unions' Housing Agency, with an office on the premises of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, can arrange flats on the private market for students. It is also a good idea to keep an eye on the Internet, newspaper ads and the notice boards of educational institutions.
