Christmas and New Year in Helsinki

kirjoita alt-teksti tähän

Even though Helsinki winds down for the festive period, there is plenty of interest to see and do.

Markets and bazaars
Are you still looking for Christmas presents? Numerous markets and events are organised in Helsinki during the Christmas time, which not only give a change to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere but also provide filling for the Christmas stocking – handicrafts, design, art and much else. The city’s largest Christmas market St. Thomas Christmas market is organised in the Esplanade Park from 7 till 22 December.

Things to do with the children
The Linnamäki Amusement Park is transformed into a winter wonderland over the weekends prior to Christmas. In addition to the traditional rides, you can also experience the thrill of the speed riding on a reindeer-drawn sledge or a spinning sledge.

You can also visit our animal friends in the Korkeasaari Zoo, where you can take the Stable Elf's route starting from 4 December. The route follows on the elf’s footprints and teaches you about how the animals prepare for the winter and Christmas.

Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth’s Christmas-time tradition The Winter Circus will exhilarate families at the Cable Factory's Pannuhalli, 4 Nov 2010–9 Jan 2011.

Relax in the fresh air or celebrate the Christmas in a restaurant
The most energetic of us can digest their Christmas delicacies in a beautiful winter nature. Try, for example, the fortress island of Suomenlinna, which is accessible by ferry all through the festive period.

Skating opportunities may be closer than you realise: There are ice rinks maintained by the City of Helsinki all over the town. It is possible to try out this wintry activity also in the Rautatientori Ice Park.

Many bars, pubs, restaurants and night clubs will be open all through the Christmas. Drop in, for example, in the Molly Malone's Irish Pub in Kaisaniemi, where there is live music even in the Christmas time, or check out the now-legendary Lost & Found in Punavuori.

Merrily towards 2011
The traditional Senate Square New Year’s celebration launches the New Year’s festivities on 31 December. Early evening programme is steered especially towards children and at midnight the turn of the year is celebrated with a music-oriented programme and fireworks.

From the last day of the year on, the Season of Light city event (31 Dec 2010–9 Jan 2011) transforms the Helsinki city centre into a journey of light from the Esplanade Park to the Parliament Building. A special ‘light tram’ will also lead the public on the journey of light.
