Institutional Background
The premises of the discipline of economics are located in the Economicum-building, Arkadiankatu 7. In the same building there are the other two departments of economics in Helsinki, namely the ones of the Hanken School of Economics and the Aalto University School of Economics , as well as the Government Institute for Economic Research (VATT). Altogether, there are more than one hundred economists in the Economicum.
The discipline of economics is a part of the Department of Political and Economic Studies, which together with the Department of Social Studies forms the Faculty of Social Sciences. The discipline is the largest of its kind in Finland. The annual intake is some 80 students.
Tuition is given by the permanent faculty: professors, lectures and assistant, but also by the docents of the discipline and a large number of other researchers.
The tuition and research satisfies high international standards, and provides a solid foundation for further studies. This is manifested by the number of publications in internationally respected scientific journals, extensive collaborative relations with foreign universities, and the research co-operation with Helsinki Center of Economic Research (HECER).
We support both domestic and international co-operation of our students through exchange programs and various other arrangements. The student body (KTTO) is very active, and it also contributes to the routine tasks of the department. The department’s alumni activities peak at the yearly occasion which kicks off the first of May celebrations.
