Dr. Freek van der Vet’s research interests include international litigation at human rights courts, legal mobilization, and the protection of human rights lawyers in dangerous environments. His academic work appeared in The International Journal of Human Rights, Social & Legal Studies, Human Rights Review, Review of Central and East European Law, and Europe-Asia Studies.

Drawing on interviews and fieldwork, his current project examines how human rights lawyers can still mobilize rights when the Russian authorities increasingly rely on laws and surveillance as tools of repression. In particular, his project looks at how lawyers protect NGOs from curtailing legislation, citizens charged with high treason, and victims of telephone tapping. In addition, Freek works on a book on an international network of lawyers that helps victims of the conflicts in Chechnya, Georgia, and Eastern Ukraine to lodge cases at the European Court of Human Rights and the International Criminal Court.
