Janis Grzybowski is a Gerda Henkel Postdoctoral Fellow at the Erik-Castrén Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in International Relations (IR)/Political Science from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva. Besides IR and political science he studied public law and Islamic studies in Tübingen, Cairo, Geneva, and Helsinki. He was a teaching assistant for the Master of International Affairs program at the IHEID, covering diverse topics from post-conflict peacebuilding to international regulation and negotiation. He also worked as a research assistant in projects on armed violence and the global arms trade at the Small Arms Survey in Geneva.

Research Interests and Project:
Janis’ main interests lie at the crossroads of IR and international law, political theory, and security and conflict studies. He is particularly interested in statehood as a limit phenomenon of international relations and law.  His postdoctoral project focuses on the transformation and resilience of the form of the state in the Middle East in the face of challenges by non-state armed groups.
