Key note speakers:
Professor Terhi Rantanen is Professor in Global Media and Communications of London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research interests include global media, global news, post-communist and communist media, media history, and the history of media studies. Professor Rantanen's books include i.a. When News Was New (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), The Media and Globalization (Sage, 2005), The Global and the National. Media and Communications in Post-Communist Russia (Rowman & Littlefield: 2002), The Globalization of News (with O. Boyd-Barrett, Sage: 1998).
Professor John Downing is the founder and director of Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Global Media Research Center, and emeritus professor of International Communication at College of Mass Communication and Media Arts in the same university. Professor Downing`s research fields include global media, the globalization of cultural production and consumption, communication policies, alternative media and social movements, political cinemas of the global South, racism, ethnicity and media. John Downings most influential book is Radical Media from 1984, revised and published in a new edition in 2001. He has recently completed editing the Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media which is published by Sage in October 2010.
