Violence and Network Society Conference

Conference on Social Violence in the Network Society
at the University of Helsinki, 6-7 November 2009

The Conference gathered together researchers of violence in society, sociologists involved in the study of violence, media researchers, historians, political researchers, philosophers, educators, researchers of visual culture and criminologists. They were discussing the significance of violence in the network society, as well as its historical, cultural and social roots and connections.

The Conference's key speakers were top media and organization researchers. Professor Barbie Zelizer from the University of Pennsylvania, Douglas Kellner, Professor in the Philosophy of Media Education from UCLA, Terhi Rantanen, Professor of Global Media and Communications at the London School of Economics (DSocSci, University of Helsinki), and Professor Stewart Clegg from the University of Technology, Sydney.

This international conference is part of the Crisis and Communication Research Project, which aims to analyse recent major Finnish crises: the Jokela and Kauhajoki school shootings, the tsunami disaster and the Nokia town water crisis. The Project poses the question: what do these various crises tell us about society and its organisations, such as the media and authorities, as well as people, in the midst of a crisis?

The research project and conference are being carried out in the Communication Research Centre at the Department of Communication, University of Helsinki. The researcher in charge is University Lecturer Salli Hakala (MSocSci). Other researchers are Johanna Sumiala (PhD), Heidi Lavento (MSocSci), Maarit Pedak (MSoc Sci, M.Sc. (Econ) and Minttu Tikka (MSoc Sci). The project is being funded by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation.
