About CRC

Communication Research Centre CRC is a special unit within the Department of Social Studies at the University of Helsinki. CRC coordinates the Media and Communication Studies' applied research and development projects.

CRC’s core research areas are:

    • Media and Journalism
    • Public Administration  Communication
    • Crisis Communication
    • Online Communication
    • Media and Communication Policy

    Founded in 2002, CRC is the only unit of its kind in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki.
    CRC’s main tasks are to:

    • offer private and public sector organisations research and services based on academic knowledge and critical research
    • develop and maintain domestic and international partnerships  with the industry and the academe
    • actively develop original research projects in different fields of communication
    • provide the Department’s students with research training opportunies in its projects
    • make a contribution to public debate on media and communication by organising seminars and conferences.

    CRC seeks research funding from different sources. Projects have been sponsored by Helsingin Sanomat Foundation and other foundations, European Union, the National Technology Agency of Finland (TEKES), etc.

    CRC also actively seeks to collaborate in international and domestic projects as a partner.

    CRC is part of the Department of Social Studies.
