Chinese Language Club

Description:
After the regular Confucius Institute courses have come to an end, a weekly Chinese Language Club will be arranged for those who are interested in practising their conversational skills. The club is open to all interested. No advance registration required. See you at the Chinese Language Club! (There will be no credits given from the Language club)

Description:
No preliminary knowledge in Chinese is required. Pronunciation and Chinese characters are taught in this course forming the base for students’ listening, reading, speaking and writing abilities. Students learn basic Chinese vocabulary and simple sentence structures. Texts introduce daily life customs and culture in China. Through this course students can understand the main points of clear standard expressions on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
Beginners’ Chinese 1 corresponds to the first term of the Chinese 1 course (Ait122A) in East Asian Studies requirements.

Description:
This course is designed for those with limited knowledge of Chinese but with an interest in listening and speaking Chinese and conversing with Chinese people about their life, work or business. This course mainly focuses on helping the learners to understand the Chinese speakers by offering some listening skills - such as how to identify key words or phrases, how to figure out what the speaker try to convey based on the tone of the speakers, and how to follow the way that native speakers express themselves. Also some of the speaking skills will be talked about in this course, including small talk and proper communication with Chinese people in terms of greetings, amenities, civilities, asking the way, seeing doctor, handling affairs in a bank, entertaining friends, enquiry making, complaints and apology making and etc. This course also can cater to those who want to improve their pronunciation as well as their ability to write the Chinese characters.

Description:

This course is designed for those who want to continue practicing their skills in listening and speaking Chinese and also can cater those who would like to take HSK test. In this course intensive and extensive listening will be integrated and listening skills concerning how to focus on those notional words and how to guess what a speaker tries to convey according to the tone of the speaker or from the context will be more emphasized. As for speaking skills this course will deal with how to digest those words expressing speaker’s mood, how to use a few interjections expressing approval or encouragement, surprise, excitement, while greetings, parting or talking. And also a rhetorical question, parentheses, compliments will be more exposed to learners and learners are expected to be familiar with fixed phrases, conventional expressions, accepted patterns. This course requires learners to have studied one year Chinese in China or to have a command of 700-800 Chinese words and certain amount of grammar.

This course is designed for those interested in Chinese Idiom stories, which are essences in Chinese language learning. Although there are only four words involved in each idiom but there is a profound and humorous story behind. The course will provide learners with more information of the Chinese history, philosophy, geography and etc by an idiom analyzing. The course consists of 16 idioms which can help learners to understand more about the philosophy each idiom can tell. Besides, learners can improve their Chinese language in terms of the Chinese character and reading. Learners are required to have a command of 800-1000 Chinese words.

Description:
This course is targeted to help learners to acquire more knowledge and skills of translation involving when to add or omit some of words to maintain the original, how to express more precisely what an author is trying to convey, in what way to emphasize on something or how to turn attributive clauses into adverbial ones, to divide longer sentences into shorter ones and how to translate some negative and passive sentences into positive ones and so on. Different styles of materials such as newspapers, documentaries, essays, letters, stories, descriptive writings and popular science will be discussed in the course. This course requires learners to have a good command of Chinese language, or to have completed one year's study in China or two year's Chinese study in some other countries and to have grasped about 1200-1500 Chinese words.
The language of instruction is both English and Chinese, open to all interested in the Chinese Language and language translation. Course requirements (5 credits) for students involve active participation in discussion 40%, attendance: 20% and the assignments for passage translation 40% .

Description:
This course is meant for students who have a command of vocabulary in the Chinese language and who have already passed HSK Level IV (equivalent to Intermediate and Advanced level before the NEW HSK – about 1200 words) . This course will be conducted by readings of short stories and problem-based discussions in class. The course is designed to offer the students more exposure to reading materials on the intermediate level. New words and expressions will be acquired in an interesting and efficient way. Students will gain a better understanding of what the author tries to convey. Through discussions in class, the students will be better equipped with information on contemporary China. Their ability to express themselves in Chinese will improve. Students are required to read the stories on their own before each class.
        本课程以阅读小说并且进行课堂讨论的方式进行。通过阅读汉语短篇小说,达到以下几个目的:一,学生能不断地接触有 一定难度的汉语阅读材料,保持已有的汉语水平。二,学习新的词语和表达方式,拓展词汇量。三,通过阅读提高汉语阅能力,能较快地理解作者的中心意思,能提 高中文阅读速度,并且通过小说的阅读,了解一些中国的社会情况,增加对当代中国的了解。四,通过课堂讨论,提高用汉语表达自己的观点的能力。
参加本课程的学习,最好具备一定的汉语、汉字水平,达到新HSK水平四级以上(即以前HSK水平的中高级。)课程学分为5学分。

Description:
The Advance Chinese Listening and Speaking course is designed to enable high-intermediate and advanced language level students to increase their language proficiency, vocabulary and have a chance to learn some daily slang, oral sentence structure, Beijing local dialect, etc. Knowledge about Youth Culture, generation gap, fashion tendency, Chinese culture traits and concepts, behaviorisms and matters will be included in the course as well. Hence, the course is to lay a solid foundation for students to begin daily communication with native speakers, achieving a high level in listening and speaking.

The course is structured around a series of comedy TV program in China, named ‘Home with Kids’.  Students who attend this course will watch a short episode first, acquiring some phrases with a high frequency of usage and sentence patterns in daily life. Afterwards, relevant discussions on Chinese culture and/or culture comparison will be hold, assisting students to understand Chinese culture in greater depth.

Maximum 15 students can be accepted in this class.

Description:
The course is designed for those interested in how to appreciate and learn Chinese character writing. By attending this course learners will be able to learn some of ways and skills of how to write correct and aesthetic Chinese characters via comprehensively learning and comprehending the stroke, rules of stroke order, radicals of the character and common errors, characteristics of the character, writing rules and memorizing Character in an interesting way. Such pedagogy will provide a foothold for Chinese language learners to further enhance their ability of independent learning on consulting dictionaries, extra-curriculum reading and etc.

Description:

The course is designed for those interested in Chinese calligraphy culture. By attending this course learners will appreciate lots of Chinese calligraphy works and have a chance to learn how to write calligraphy themselves. After the course, learners could get a general knowledge of the origin of calligraphy, four treasures of calligraphy, famous calligraphy works, influential styles, basic brush stocks and essentials of writing technique. All those knowledge would in turn enhance their understanding of traditional Chinese culture and the spiritual world of Chinese people.
Besides introduction into calligraphy and evaluation of calligraphic works, students learn Chinese calligraphy themselves. The instructing language of the course is English. The course is open to all interested in Chinese calligraphy. Assessment:Attendance 20%, calligraphy work 50% and the assignments for the course 30%.
