Masculinities in New Times: 11-14-year-olds in Helsinki schools (MiNT)

This project examines everyday experiences of and interpretations on masculinities of 1114-year-olds in three schools in Helsinki. A central background for the project is the rapid transformation of Finland to a visibly multi-ethnic and linguistically plural society. At the same time, masculinities are changing, which may have effects, for instance, on how boys do in school and how the popularity hierarchies are formed among boys and girls. Thus, boys and girls have to negotiate new social orders in relation to multi-ethnic social relations as well as gender and class. This small-scale study aims to throw light on how boys are living, and thinking about, masculinities in contemporary Helsinki. It builds on a larger-scale study that the leader of this project (Ann Phoenix) carried out with colleagues in London (Frosh, Phoenix and Pattman, 2002). The data of the project consist of individual and focus group interviews with boys and some girls on themes like school, friendships, relationships with boys and girls and future visions for themselves and Finnish society.
