The philosophical critique of the concept of man in contemporary critical theory

By drawing on the findings of psychoanalysis, deconstruction and gender studies, Gubenko will consider the implications of these influential theoretical standpoints regarding the humanities, i. e. the field of research that takes man to be its ultimate reference point. By arguing that the universal concept of man maintained by the Western intellectual tradition throughout its history is a philosophical fiction with potentially grave consequences in the social field, Gubenko will attempt to formulate a viable legitimation discourse of the humanities that would balance the intellectual demand for universality with the imperative need to respect singularity and otherness in the world where finding a common ground between different ethnic, religious, racial, gender etc. identities still remains a challenge and where the presumption of genuinely universal human experience shared by all individuals appears to be rather a phantasmatic construct than a positive fact.
