Public Discourse on Immigration in Scandiavia 1970-2016

Prof Gripsrud is 2016-2020 the Director of a major project based at the University of Bergen, SCANPUB, which investigates public discourse on immigration in Denmark, Norway and Sweden since 1970. The general impression has been that the three countries have had markedly different public discourses in terms of both contents and styles. Sweden has been perceived as the most immigration-friendly, Denmark as the least immigration-friendly - while Norway has been placed in a middle position. SCANPUB aims to empirically confirm or reject this judgement. If differences are found, the aim is to suggest ways of explaining them. The project covers both the cultural and the political public sphere. It is also seen as a case study of how the public sphere actually functions when liberal democracies handle major, complex political issues.
