Travel grants

The Doctoral Programme in Clinical Research (KLTO) receives operational funds from the Doctoral School in Health Science. The below outlined travel grants are dependent on the annual funding and the economics permitting this support. The travel grants available via KLTO are:

PLEASE NOTE! The travel grant recipients are expected to actively participate and present their posters/talks in local events (eg. Annual KLTO Science Day, Meilahti Science Fair etc.)


1. CHANCELLOR'S TRAVEL GRANT FOR DOCTORAL CANDIDATES IN KLTO

Doctoral candidates in KLTO are invited to apply for the Chancellor's travel grant from February 1 to February 28, 2017 (4 pm) via the online application form:

AMOUNT OF THE CHANCELLOR’S TRAVEL GRANT
The Chancellor´s travel grant for KLTO doctoral candidates can be applied for travelling to international scientific conferences or practical courses. The annual travel grant per doctoral candidate for attending a scientific conference or a practical course is max. 800 € for a trip within Europe and 1500 € for a trip to a non-European country.

USE OF THE CHANCELLOR’S TRAVEL GRANT
The Chancellor’s travel grant can be used to cover travel costs, such as transportation, accommodation and registrations fees.

PURPOSE OF THE CHANCELLOR’S TRAVEL GRANT
The Chancellor’s travel grant can be applied for attending an international conference or practical course. In the case of conferences either an oral or poster (1st author) presentation is required. The grant is allocated on the basis of the relevance of the course or meeting for the applicant.

The main criterion for receiving the Chancellor’s travel grant for attending an international meeting is a talk or a poster. Additional criteria include relevance of the meeting and successful submission of the previous year’s progress report (not applicable for first year doctoral candidates).

2. KLTO TRAVEL GRANTS FOR INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH VISITS – ongoing application

The KLTO travel grant for research visits provides support for international visits of varying lengths (e.g. 2 weeks - 6 months). The amount of support depends on the length of the stay and the destination and is max. 1500 €. The travel grant can be used to cover travel costs, such as transportation, accommodation and registrations fees.

Potential grantees are asked to supplement the application with a letter of invitation and a short recommendation from the primary thesis supervisor. Please send the documents by e-mail to clinical-office(at)helsinki.fi. For research visits emphasis is given to the benefit of the visit for the progress of the thesis work.

Note that all travel grants awarded by KLTO are subjected to budgetary limitations and can only be allocated to registered doctoral candidates.


3. KLTO TRAVEL GRANTS FOR PARTICIPATING IN SCIENTIFIC COURSES AND MEETINGS IN FINLAND - ongoing application

KLTO is an active partner in the National Doctoral Training Network in Clinical Medicine formed by the doctoral programmes at the Universities of Helsinki, Eastern Finland (Kuopio), Oulu, Tampere and Turku. Doctoral candidates enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Research at the University of Helsinki may apply for a travel grant to participate in courses organized by the National Doctoral Training Network in Clinical Medicine. In addition, the travel grants can be applied to participate in other scientific courses and meetings in Finland. Please note, the main criterion for receiving the KLTO travel grant for attending a national meeting is a talk or a poster.

The application should clearly indicate how the course/meeting benefits the doctoral candidate and the progress of the thesis work. The application should also include the dates and reasons of the travel and an estimation of the travel expenses (transportation and accommodation). The travel grant applications are awarded on case by case basis by the director of the doctoral programme. The travel expenses (max. 500 €) are paid according to actual expenses (original receipts are required) and may be claimed after the trip.
