About the conference

ChangE 2015 engages the variety of Englishes we are witnessing today – as a lingua franca, as World English varieties, as a second language. English features strongly among today’s highly mobile speakers, subjecting it to particularly intense and varied language contact. Since periods of increased mobility have tended to lead to accelerated language change, we can expect fast changes in English(es).

Following on the success of ChangE 2013, we invite researchers to another cross-disciplinary investigation of the processes and products of intense, complex and sustained language contact in different L1 and L2 varieties. We hope to bring together scholars from different research traditions including but not limited to the following major areas:

  • contact linguistics
  • typology
  • English as a lingua franca (ELF)
  • second language acquisition and use (SLA and SLU)
  • cognitive linguistics
  • multilingualism

ChangE 2015 is organised by the Changing English consortium, a collaborative project involving researchers at the universities of Helsinki, Tampere, and Eastern Finland. With funding from the Academy of Finland for 2014-2017, we are building on the progress made in our prior Academy-funded collaboration, the Global English (GlobE) consortium.

On these pages you can see the distinguished panel of keynote speakers who have confirmed their participation and read the final call for papers. You will also find practical information about transportation and accommodation. To learn more about the previous conference held in June 2013, see the ChangE 2013 website, where you can browse the earlier programme and abstracts.

We look forward to seeing you in Helsinki!
