The Institute of Biotechnology was established in 1989 as an administratively independent research and educational unit at the University of Helsinki. The purpose of the Institute is to carry out research in biotechnology, molecular biology, cell biology and related disciplines; to develop and maintain international relations; to cooperate with other research institutes, universities and industry; and to provide and promote education in the field. The main goal of the Institute is to develop into the leading research centre of modern biotechnology and molecular biology in Finland. The Institute is part of the Helsinki Biocenter and is now located in Viikki.
