Practical training

Practical training is one of the best ways to acquire work experience in your own field before graduation. The practical training is recommended to be completed e.g. during the first summer of the Master’s degree studies.
Trainee posts can be in the departments, universities, research institutes and stations, in public sector (regional and governmental authorities), and in private companies and organizations in Finland or abroad.
The student is responsible for finding the training place. Information about the training places can be found from the responsible professors, Departments' study counsellors, on Departments' notice boards, in Aarresaari (Academic Career Service network) job announcements, in the UH Career Services RekryForum and in the Alma-link https://alma.helsinki.fi/doclink/107423 . Please also visit the Departments' research group home pages for interesting training opportunities.
International Master's Degree students can apply for the Department-funded traineeship support. As there is not enough funding to cover all traineeship expenses by the Departments, the Department-funded support is mainly granted for 1 month per student and the employer is asked to participate in the funding of the rest of the training period. It is also highly recommended that students seek trainee posts where the employer would pay all the expenses themselves. The salary in the Department-funded system in 2011 was minimum 1071 € per month.
General information about university-funded traineeship can be found in Alma:
Students > Studies and teaching: Studies and employment >Traineeship (https://alma.helsinki.fi/doclink/107413).
