Much of the teaching in MBIOT is conducted by different research groups and group leaders in the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, and the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, as well as in a top-level research institute, the Institute of Biotechnology. This research-based teaching offers biotechnology M.Sc. students the opportunity to complete their Practical Training, Advanced Training in a Research group and their Master’s Thesis in the high-level research groups on the Viikki Campus or on other related campuses.

Many of the research groups and group leaders involved in the MBIOT teaching belong to the high-level research organizations, such as the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences, the national Centres of Excellence in Research (CoE) Programmes coordinated by the Academy of Finland, the Biocentrum Helsinki and/or the Biomedicum Helsinki. A list of relevant research organizations, - programs, - groups and - subjects is shown below. More information also in the UH Research database TUHAT.
