Target group: This course is recommended for all students interested in developmental biology and genetics; especially for those planning to carry out M.Sc. or Ph.D. thesis projects in these or related fields of research.
Preceding studies: Geenit ja yksilönkehitys (52937) recommended
Objective: To learn laboratory skills in functional genetics and developmental biology, to learn advantages of different research model organisms
Contents: Model organisms and models in functional genetics and developmental biology (mouse, chicken, Drosophila, Caenorhabditis elegans, stem cell cultures). Methods to modify gene expression (transgenic animals, mutagenesis, tissue culture, tissue electroporation, viral vectors, RNAi). Methods to analyse gene expression in vivo (mRNA in situ hybridization, immunhistochemistry, reporter alleles).

Completion: Lectures only (2 credits). Lectures, lab demonstrations and group work (6 credits).
