Contents: General aspects about the structures of viruses, replication, life cycle, classification and evolution.

NB! Lectures will be held in Finnish. For English speaking students the exam is based on provided reading material in English.

Previous studies: Basic and cum laude-level studies in general microbiology. The course is also suitable for postgraduate students. The number of participants is limited to 8 students.

528014 Mikrobiologian erikoiskurssi / Course in microbial ecology  (5-7 op)
Suitable for English-speaking students
Time: 10.10.-27.10.2011, at  10-18
Place: course room 2016, Biocenter 1
Person in charge and subject: University lecturer Kim Yrjälä/ general microbiology.
Prerequisities: Basics of biosciences I and II, Laboratory courses including Microbiology and microbial genetics and Gene technology, Lectures in microbial ecology or comparable studies
Aim: To main aim is to show what modern microbial ecology is both through lab experiments, lectures and excursions.  
Contents: In the course students are acquainted with research of pristine and polluted ecosystems by studying functional microbial communities starting from DNA isolation ending up in phylogenetic analysis of microbes and use of computer programs for sequence analysis. The emphasis on the course is on genetic tools in studying the diversity of microbes in different ecosystems.

Grading: Exam (0-5) and work report (0-5)
