523052 Conservation Biology in Fragmented Landscapes - Fall 2012

The course will give information on the spatial structure and dynamics of fragmented populations. The topics of the lectures deal with habitat loss and fragmentation, metapopulation concepts and modelling, the causes and patterns of extinctions, dispersal in fragmented landscapes, population genetics of fragmented populations, and the selection of natural reserve networks.
The compulsory parts include 12 lectures, three computer practicals and six small-group discussion sessions leading up to a two-day (weekend) seminar focusing on applied conservation issues. Preparing for the seminar will also include independent teamwork.
Students may also take an optional exam on the book: Hanski, Ilkka (2005) The shrinking world: ecological consequences of habitat loss (2 credits/ects on a separate course code 523140).
