The general aim of this project is to study variation in the content and quality of lignin in Norway spruce and Silver birch trees in collaboration with the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) and the University of Helsinki. A method based on Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and principal component regression (PCR) has been developed for a large scale survey of Finnish Norway spruces. The variation has been studied in the lignin content and wood properties between different cutting clones and growing environments. FTIR spectroscopy is applied also for an analysis of Silver birch and other wood species.
The other aim of the project is to modify wood material properties for different uses. Wood lignin has been modified with a natural phenolic compound, coniferyl alcohol, in order to increase the wood decay resistance. The results of the project can be utilized in the forest tree breeding and in the different industrial purposes.
