Integrative Ecology Unit

Understanding ecology by integrating all available tools
In IKP, we investigate ecological processes by integrating a variety of methods, including time-series analysis of long-term data sets, population simulations, field and lab-based experiments and deep theoretical insights with the aid of cooking brandy.

We are part of the Nordic Centre of Excellence Network Ecoclim, assessing the Impact of Climatic Variation on Population Dynamics. This work is carried out in collaboration with the Universities of Oslo and Lund.

Teaching

The course gives an introduction to development and analysis of population models with computer simulations. Classical aspects of population ecology and management will be discussed. The topics include management aspects of game, fisheries and conservation biology. The course is demanding, involving lots of supervised exercises in a computer class. The most demanding part of the workshop is that each student will choose her/his own problem in, e.g., population management. The problem - for most solved by self-supervised learning - is solvable by the means and tools taught at the beginning of the workshop. A proper solution demands development and use of simulation models. The workshop ends with student-written reports of the results of their efforts. These, and other aspects of the workshop, will be discussed with the teachers at a closing seminar. Don't be afraid!.
