My academic interests lie in the field of evolution and sexual selection. I find it fascinating to see what the interplay between these forces has resulted in. And although species show a great deal of flexibility to deal with even the most hostile of environments, the effects of man's workings are exerting tremendous pressures and reshaping life as we know it. The consequences are as fascinating as they are frightening. For many species their continued existence has now become a matter of sink, swim or learn to evolve really quickly. This offers unique opportunities for the biological sciences but also shows the increasing need for knowledge if we are to understand and predict the impact our way of life exerts.
I have joined the University of Helsinki in October 2005 for a PhD on the effect of eutrophication of the Baltic Sea on sexual selection in threespine sticklebacks, focussing on alternative mating tactics (sneaking behaviour and egg stealing). Through laboratory experiments, field observations and genetical analyses I hope to discover how these behavioural patterns are modified under changing environmental conditions.

Curriculum vitae

I obtained my MSc. in biology at Leiden University, the Netherlands
where I studied from 1999 until 2004. During the last three years I
have been involved in three long and diverse internships. I did this in
order to find out where my interests in biology were and what kind of
research was up my alley. Below is a shortened version of my curriculum
vitae, please email me for a longer version.
| Education |
|
| 1999-2004 |
Leiden University, The Netherlands. MSc in Evolutionary Biology |
| 2001-2002 |
Internship with EEW (institute for Evolutionary and Ecological Sciences, nowadays part of the IBL), Leiden University under supervision of Prof. Dr. P.M. Brakefield & Dr. C. Müller on the effectiveness of the chemical defence mechanism of sawfly larvae (Athalia rosae) against predators and the functional significance of butterfly eyespots, both using lizards (Anolis carolinensis) as model predator. |
| 2002-2003 |
Internship with IMP (institute for Plant Molecular Sciences), Leiden University and TNO, department of Applied Plant Sciences under supervision of Dr. H.A.A.J. Korthout & G.M.D.J. Gaussand on the molecular processes involved in Programmed Cell Death in plant cells, using rice (Oryza sativa) cell suspension cultures as model system. |
| 2004 |
Internship with CML (Centre of Environmental Science), Leiden University under supervision of Dr. H.H. de Iongh & Ir. S. van der Mark on the factors influencing the distribution and flight responses of lions and their prey in Waza National Park in Northern Cameroon. This involved six months of fieldwork in Northern Cameroon, Africa. |

| RFBF.zip (3 kb) |
Output style for EndNote 9.0. Since EndNote has no output style for Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries and the journal doesn't have one available on its webpages, I wrote one myself. See the included readme.txt for more information. |

| AutoHotkey |
A free and open-source utilty for Windows that allows you to define your own hotkeys, write mouse or keyboard macros or create custom GUIs. You can automate pretty much any repetitive task you do at your computer. It also supports PERL regular expressions, so can be a very powerful tool in handling, converting and manipulating raw data files. |
R |
A free and open-source programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics. A certain familiarity with command line interfaces is beneficial. |
G-test for R |
A script for R to perform the G-test. Written by Peter L. Hurd from the Department of Psychology, University of Alberta, Canada. |
