I graduated in 2009 in Environmental Biology. In my Master’s thesis I assessed with the help of a circumarctic basal peat age data set the initiation and lateral expansion of northern peatlands during the Holocene. I continue working on the data set and its implications next to my actual PhD work.
In my PhD studies I’m fulfilling my dream of studying human caused environmental problems and their environmental impacts in the Arctic, and trying to find ways to combat these. The main task of my post-graduate work is to determine the accumulation and sources of black carbon (BC) aerosol in the European Arctic during the industrialized era. Therefore I’m analysing subarctic lake sediments and an ice core from Svalbard for spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCP), elemental carbon (EC) and soot carbon (SC), which are all part of the BC continuum. The ultimate objective of my work is to evaluate the environmental impact of BC in the past and based on this formulate suggestions on how climate warming could possibly be mitigated in the Arctic. My work is part of the Nordic Centre of Excellence CRAICC (Cryosphere-Atmosphere Interactions in a Changing Arctic Climate) and I belong to the Arctic Doctoral Programme ARKTIS (University of Lapland).
