PhD Studies

In order to carry out PhD studies aiming at the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the department, you must be registered as a PhD student in the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences in one of the majors.

Please check the faculty web pages for more detailed information about how to apply for the right to complete a PhD degree and the formal requirements for the application, for example, a valid Master’s degree and an appointed supervisor.

Financial support for the thesis work can be arranged by applying for personal grants or finding employment in a research group. Also, graduate schools occasionally have an open call to fill salaried PhD student positions. Applicants are selected based on their scientific competence and research plans. The salary is paid by the school, but the position is assigned to one of the member research groups or institutes.

Graduate schools that our students can attend:

Graduate schools arrange courses and other teaching. Most of the graduate schools accept “matching funds” students, who have their own outside funding and are  allowed access to the courses arranged by the school. Each student in a graduate school must register as PhD student in one of the academic faculties in Finland in order to receive the PhD degree.
