GRADUATE TRAINING PROGRAMS

Helsinki Graduate Program in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology was established in 1994 as part of the Ministry of Education and Culture initiative to develop graduate training in Finland. The students are from different backgrounds of Biomedical and Life Sciences. GPBM is the  international PhD-training program of the Biocentrum Helsinki organization.  The competition for admission is tough; the selection is carried out on the basis of previous merits of the students, along with their dedication and enthusiasm towards science. There are currently some 50 graduate students enrolled in GPBM representing 13 different nationalities.  All teaching is given in English and the courses and lectures are mostly available to all graduate students in the University of Helsinki and Aalto University. Biocentrum Helsinki sponsors the organization of lecture courses, symposia and other functions of the program.

The GPBM graduate program is intended for four years of theoretical and practical studies culminating in academic dissertation. The scientific project is chosen by the student on the basis of discussions with his/her supervisor, and the student's progress is closely monitored by a thesis committee. Additionally, the students give presentations of their progress in Science Fairs and other events organized by the program. Participation in international scientific symposia and workshops is financially supported. The lectures and practical training courses aim at providing most up-to-date knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology and biotechnology. A broad based training is purported to provide the students with a wide perspective of their research area and enables them to utilize their training not only in academic science, but opens other possibilities in career development, including industry and other biotechnological applications.

Other Graduate Programs Supported by Biocentrum Helsinki

In addition to the Helsinki Graduate School in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, Biocentrum Helsinki groupleaders are actively involved in two other graduate school programs at the University of Helsinki.

Helsinki Biomedical Graduate Program (Planning Officer, Marianna Jokila, tel. +358-9-191 25585)

Viikki Doctoral Programme in Molecular Biosciences (coordinator, PhD Nina Bergelin, tel. +358-9-191 59642).

Biocentrum Helsinki sponsors the function of these two graduate programs; in particular, by funding their training and lecture courses.
