CONNECTING SCIENTISTS VOL 2 (2012):
BIOCENTRUM HELSINKI FOSTERING COLLABORATION BETWEEN AALTO UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKIDeadline for presentations and dinner registration: 23rd of May, 2012.
Advances in technology have transformed biological sciences during the past few years. Complex data produced with current methods has made interdisciplinary approaches a prerequisite for success. Not to mention the other yet undiscovered opportunities of interdisciplinary projects combining life sciences with various fields of technology, economics, art and design. Biocentrum Helsinki (BCH) initiated last year a project called “Connecting Scientists” to bring junior researchers at the Aalto University together with biology and biomedicine researchers at the University of Helsinki by providing small-scale seed funding for collaborative projects. This year opens a new chance to participate and create inter-university projects in the context of life-sciences. The possibilities of joint projects are wide; Collaboration may relate to tackling the challenges of complex data, or involve automation / commercialization / design of a relevant product. You name it! If you are an advanced PhD student, post-doc or junior PI, consider this collaboration and funding opportunity. Also, if you find that there are skills / techniques / materials you would need or could share in the context of life-sciences, do not drop out even if the term “researcher” wouldn’t describe you that well.
As the first step to enable the connections between people from different fields, BCH has opened a web database for short project/expertise profiles (a.k.a. “postcards”) for researchers from both universities. Note that a concrete proposal for collaboration interface is possible but not a prerequisite for posting your profile - interest and potential is sufficient. Submit your info using the PDF form (BCH profile submission form 2012 .pdf ) to biocentrum-helsinki -at- helsinki.fi Please, consider also sending a photo of yourself or other display item. (Note that for confidentiality reasons the “postcards” are accessible from the universities’ networks only.)
The next phase to enable interdisciplinary connections and discussions is a networking event to be held on 31st of May in Hanasaari Cultural Center (Espoo). The outline of the event will be similar to the year 2011, including short (2-3min) introductory presentations by each participant followed by discussion sessions. The event will end with a dinner and a possibility for sauna. More detailed info about the event will follow at a later date. Agenda for the networking event
Subsequently, projects proposed jointly by people representing both the two universities will be provided with an opportunity to get funding. Info about the magnitude of the grants, application instructions and schedules will be placed to the BCH website in due time. Deadlines: Note, the registration deadline extended until 6th of May.- Deadline for registration to the networking event, which can be done by submitting the expertise profile, is on 29th of April. - Expertise profiles submitted after 29th of April will also be added to the database. However, participation to the networking event cannot be guaranteed for these late entries. -The call for grant applications will open later in 2012. Note that submitting an expertise profile is not a prerequisite for applying for a grant, but is highly recommended. Should any questions arise, do not hesitate to contact the organizing team: biocentrum-helsinki -at- helsinki.fi It's not a dream, interdisciplinary is real!
