Research at the Faculty
Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences is responsible for international high-level research in biosciences and environmental sciences carried out at the University of Helsinki. The Faculty plays an important role in the development of the research concentration in biosciences at Viikki Campus.
The Faculty is comprised of two departments:
The Department of Biosciences is located in Viikki. The major subjects are: Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, General Microbiology, Genetics, Physiology and Plant Biology.
The Department of Environmental Sciences is located in Viikki and in the city of Lahti. The major subjects are: Aquatic Sciences, Environmental Ecology and Environmental Change and Policy.
The Faculty also has research activities at three field stations:
Kilpisjärvi Biological Station in Lapland,
Lammi Biological Station in Lammi and
Tvärminne Zoological Station in Hanko.
Furthermore, the Faculty coordinates the Helsinki University Centre for Environment (HENVI).
