Studies in Lithuanian language and culture can be started in every odd-numbered year (2011, 2013, etc.), while Latvian can be started in even-numbered years (2010, 2012, etc.). The aim is to complete the BA degree in three years and the MA in a further two years. Major students complete their Basic Studies (perusopinnot) during the first year. Intermediate Studies (aineopinnot; also known in English as Subject Studies) begin in the spring semester of the first year and should be completed by the end of the third year. For those majoring in the subject, the Intermediate Studies include a proseminar, for which the student writes a paper on a topic in Latvian or Lithuanian language or literature. The Basic Studies must be completed before starting the proseminar. The Advanced Studies are started in the fourth year and should be finished by the end of the fifth.
