Data communication services for units

Email is the primary means for providing departmental IT support staff with advice in telecommunication and network issues. Some services are accessible online in the form of different forms and databases.

Fixed network

A workstation connected to the University network must always be registered online before its use. After registration, the device receives its Internet address, in other words its IP address and Internet user ID automatically from the DHCP server. Fixed addresses must not be set for devices connected to the University network.

With secure SSL connections (HTTPS, SSL-IMAP) every server has its own certificate.

The faculties can also obtain their own domains under the helsinki.fi domain. Large projects between several higher education institutions can also obtain their own .fi domain.

Information on active network devices (including the number of active ports) is available through the www.fe.helsinki.fi portal, providing the department administrator has been given access rights to view the information in his/her own building.

Departments may also offer public services outside the University network. The services must first be registered and accepted by IT Services. It is possible to open a NetMeeting connection through the firewall for a certain period of time.

Wireless local area network

It is possible for the University departments to order both fixed and wireless HUPnet access points for their own use. Computers connected to the wireless network do not have to be registered. In this case, the connections are hosted through HUPnet.
