How to publish a homepage

WWW-homepage is your personal page to show your interests, work, studies etc. with text and pictures. Technically, your homepage is located in a homepage directory which can be viewed trough www-address. All files in your homepage directory can be viewed in internet. Files you don't want others to see, place them in your home directory.

Creating homepage directory and uploading files there depends which kind of user account you have.

Homepages at university's servers are ment be used in non-commercial activities, e.g. advertising your own firm is not allowed. Remember also copyrights: you can't use pictures without the permisson of the authors.

With Kotisivun julkaisu form you can add your homepage to university's homepage directory. With same form you can get additional homepage address, http://www.helsinki.fi/people/firstname.surname/.

Info -server

Your homepage's address will be http://www.mv.helsinki.fi/home/username
Username means here only the namepart of the username, no dots in front or context in the end.

To order homepage directory

You can create your homepage directory with Web directory creation -form. Give your username with the dot in front and context .it.hy at the end (e.g. .account.it.hy)

Moving files to homepage directory

First page of your homepage has to be titled index.html. If you have pictures and other files linked to the main page, those have to be moved to the homepage directory as well. In application launcher at computer labs computers is KOTISIVU / Homepage W: icon in Webtools -program group. By douple clicking the the icon, you can use your home page directory the same way as your home directory (R:\) or a floppy drive (A:\).

Unix

Address your homepage will be http://www.helsinki.fi/~account/

To order homepage directory

In unix-system, give command luokotisivu. This will create the homedirectory and give it necessary rights.

Moving files to homepage directory

WWW-page directory under your homedirectory in unix-system is public_html. Index -page should be titled index.html. If you have pictures and other files linked to the main page, those have to be uploaded to the homepage directory as well.

• Use WinSCP transfer softwareto make connection to kruuna.helsinki.fi server using your unix-account and passsword
• Upload files using the program to public_html-directory in your homedirectory
• After the tranfer, in unix shell type command chmod a+r ~/public_html/*.*. This command will give all the files in your homepage directory necessary rights that your homepage can been seen in internet.

Homepages for mmtdk-account

The address of your homepage will be http://www.mm.helsinki.fi/~käyttäjätunnus/

• Open R:\-drive in your home directory
• Create a subdirectory public_html
• Create in the public_html-directory homepage index.html

The main page of your homepage has to be titled index.html. If you have pictures and other files linked to the main page, those have to be moving to the homepage directory as well.
