Research

Current research in Altaic Studies focus on the Amdo (Gansu-Qinghai) region of the Sino-Tibetan borderland in Eastern Central Asia. The choice of a research topic integrated with this regional focus is encouraged. Methodologically, approaches ranging from comparative linguistics and linguistic typology to comparative religion and ethnic policy issues are possible.

In 2005–2008, research was co-ordinated under the project Ethnic Interaction and Adaptation in Amdo Qinghai, supported by the Academy of Finland.

Asian Studies also hosts a research project on An Etymological Dictionary of Middle Mongolian. The project is funded by the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Research is supported by Asian Studies Researcher Network which arranges, for example, international guest lectures within the Asian Studies Forum. The network facilitates communication and co-operation among researchers working on Asian-related topics.
