Art History

Art history examines a broad range of themes related to visual culture and the built environment, both as historical questions and contemporary phenomena. In addition to the most traditional subjects areas, such as fine arts, architecture and design, art historians also study imagery in advertising and the media, and analyse the structures of art institutions, changes in art theory and questions related to the conservation of the built environment. Art forms are constantly being developed and their boundaries are not static, which poses ever new challenges to researching art history. Art historical methods are applied in this evolving research environment using historical, sociological, psychological and, for example, semiotic and narratological approaches.
The studies include many practical courses in which the acquisition and production of information are closely interlinked. The teaching also involves study trips both in Finland and abroad. Knowledge of foreign languages is important to students majoring in art history: in addition to English and Swedish, a knowledge of German, Italian or French is helpful.
Studies in art history provide knowledge and skills for working in a wide range of fields. Typically, art historians have worked in universities, museums, the conservation of buildings and the media, as well as art galleries and various art and artist organisations. Local authorities, civil service and museums often consult art historians in drawing up various reports and studies. A knowledge of art history is also required in several expert positions in art institutions, building and environmental conservation, the media and various planning duties. Art historians are also sought-after lecturers and teachers, for example, at the Open University and adult education centres.
The teaching staff consists of two professors and two university lecturers. Docents, part-time teachers and researchers take part in teaching and advisement in their field of expertise.
Approximately 250 MA students have art history as their major and there are approximately 60 doctoral students of art history. On average 20 master's degree students graduate per year and one to four doctoral dissertations are presented. 14 new students are accepted throgh the annual enterance exam.
The premises are located at the main building of the University, together with the Library of Art History and the centre for Image Services. Also, the University Drawing School is historically a part of the subject of Art History.
