Baltic and North Sea in the Middle Ages and later A conference to be held in Tammisaari (Sw. Ekenäs) in Finland from the 11th to the 13th of May 2006. The main objective of the symposium is to contribute to the research of medieval and later maritime societies, demonstrating the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach. Themes:
Contributing to the research of medieval and later maritime societies, demonstrating the necessity of an holistic approach thereof and highlighting the role of archaeology in relation to this objective. Contributing to improve the study and management of medieval and later fishermen's heritage in order to improve future research. The Walraversijde-project (Province of West Flanders, Belgium) is an important partner in this field. Giving the historical and archaeological heritage of the Southern coast of Finland extra publicity. Contributing to an international network of scientific institutes, museums and other bodies dealing with fishery-related matters concentrating on the study and management of fishing and fishermen's heritage from the Middle Ages and later, but also more generally with maritime heritage as a whole. The colloquium is the second of a series organized by the network. The first was organized at the Museum Walraversijde, Ostend, West Flanders, Belgium by the Flemish Heritage Institute (VIOE), the Province of West Flanders, the Free University of Brussels and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ).
