Current research

The current research activities in the programme are focused on the Amdo (Gansu-Qinghai) region of the Sino-Tibetan borderland in Eastern Central Asia. The choice of a research topic integrated with this regional focus is encouraged. Methodologically, approaches ranging from comparative linguistics and linguistic typology to comparative religion and ethnic policy issues are possible. In 2005-2008, the research activities were coordinated under the project Ethnic Interaction and Adaption in Amdo Qinghai, supported by the Academy of Finland.

Besides the Amdo project, there is a research project called An Etymological Dictionary of Middle Mongolian. The project is funded by the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Prospective postgraduate students can find more information about application process from the University website.
