Historical background

Since Finland is the "homeland" of Altaic Studies, research in the field has a long tradition going back to the early 19th century. As a separate academic subject, Altaic Studies has been represented at the University of Helsinki since the early 20th century, but there has never been a regular chair in the field. In 1995 Altaic Studies was integrated into the chair of East Asian Cultures and Languages. Since 2005, Altaic Studies has functioned as a separate MA programme at the Institute, the person in charge being the professor for East Asian Studies, Juha Janhunen.
