Narratives for nations - Vilnius summer school addressed questions of identity
Summer schools are not only for undergraduates – doctoral students can benefit from them as well. This
was demonstrated by the success of the international summer school on identities, organised by the Aleksanteri
Institute and the Neru network in Vilnius in June. Twentyfive doctoral students from Estonia, Finland, Lithuania,
Norway, Russia and Sweden participated in the summer school, which was entitled “From Cold War to the Bronze
Soldier” and was funded by NordForsk. The students felt that the summer school provided valuable perspectives
and ideas about how to research the manifold and often elusive concept of identity.
