3.6.2014 Educational Reforms in Russia

Aleksanteri Institute and Academy of Finland's Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies – Choices of Russian Modernisation will organize a seminar titled

Educational Reforms in Contemporary Russia: Neoliberal Ideology, Authoritarianism and Social Change

on June 3, 2014 at the Aleksanteri Institute (Unioninkatu 33, Helsinki), 2nd floor seminar room.

Seminar description:

The seminar explores the dynamics between neoliberal educational agenda, its authoritarian implementation and its social consequences in contemporary Russia. The 2000s have witnessed a radical transformation of Russia’s education sector. The neoliberal reform package introduced into the system included the introduction of a two-tire higher education structure, the development of a standardised nationwide test, and restructuring of education financing mechanisms. Authoritarian methods of reform implementation coupled with lingering rigidity of traditional socio-political institutions have resulted in a variety of unintended reform consequences, including increased educational inequality, the development of a quasi-market in secondary school education, and mass grassroots resistance. The seminar will probe into a number of socio-pedagogical controversies underlying neoliberal reforms in Russian education, uncover main political mechanisms of reform adaptation and implementation, and explore some of its social consequences.
