MA Meri Kulmala will defend her PhD thesis entitled State and Society in small-town Russia. A Feminist-ethnographic Inquiry into the Boundaries of Society in the Finnish-Russian Borderland at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki (Unioninkatu 34, Auditorium XII) on December 18th, 2013, at noon.

The seminar Gender, Activism and Political Legitimacy in Russia was organised by the Doctoral School for Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies (REEES), the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies, and the Department of Social Research.

The keynote speaker of the seminar was Professor Valerie Sperling from the Department of Political Science at Clark University.

The call for applications for the Central Asia Fellowships at the Aleksanteri Institute for spring 2014 was open until 20 November 2013. Two visiting scholars were selected: Natalie Koch from Syracuse University, USA (1 month) and Slavomir Horák from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic (2 months).

We wish to sincerely thank all those who were interested in coming to the University of Helsinki and to the Aleksanteri Institute!

This was the first of the two calls for Central Asia Fellowships at the Aleksanteri Institute; a subsequent call will be open in October 2014 for stays in 2015.

Call for Central Asia Fellowships for spring 2014 was closed on the 20th of November 2013. A maximum of two grants (monthly grant of €2,600) for stays of 1–3 months at the Aleksanteri Institute will be granted for the spring term 2014. The selection will be concluded by 20 December 2013.

Aleksanteri Institute invited applications from highly qualified scholars conducting research on topics related to Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) in a field relevant to the Aleksanteri Institute’s research agenda.

The call for postdoctoral researcher(s) at the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies Choices of Russian Modernisation closed on 5.11.2013.

Applications for doctoral student positions in the Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change, and in the sub-programme Doctoral Programme for Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) for a 1–4 year period starting from 1.1.2014 were invited until 31.10.2013, 16:00 (Finnish local time).

67 applications from 25 countries were submitted to the Doctoral Programme for Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) by the deadline. Judging from the exceptional international interest, the programme appears well known all over the world: 87 % of the applications came from abroad

Largest single origin of applications was the UK, while a delightful amount of applications were received also from Japan and the US. REEES is a sub-programme of the Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change which received altogether 197 applications. The application process will last until the end of November, but we’d like to take this chance to thank all the applicants for their interest in our programme!

Aleksanteri Conference 2013: Russia and the World
The 13th Aleksanteri Conference was held in Helsinki 23-25 October. Russia's place in the world of today and especially that of tomorrow was a subject that evoked a wide range of opinions both among the invited speakers and the audience. Close to 300 people participated in the 40 panels and 5 plenaries over the three days.

Adrei Kortunov (RIAC), Markku Kivinen (Aleksanteri Institute) and Aart De Geus (Bertelsmann Stiftung) welcomed the participants to the conference. Keynote lecture was given by Sergei Karaganov (HSE Moscow, pictured in the middle) and Hanna Smith (Aleksanteri Institute) acted as chair.

Aleksanteri Insight - Snapshots of Eurasia
Aleksanteri Insight is a new series of expert opinions. It presents in a short format analysis of specific issues, their underlying causes and implications in the Eurasian context. The first text is by Andrei P. Tsygankov: "Has Russia graduated from the West?" Aleksanteri Insight is published in Finnish and in English at www.helsinki.fi/aleksanteri/english/insight

The October issue of Aleksanteri News is dedicated to the 13th Annual Aleksanteri Conference Russia and the World taking place in Helsinki on 23.-25.10.2013. The conference will host a record number of 40 panels and 5 plenary sessions by distinguished international scholars. You'll find the conference programme on pages 4-9 and information about the speakers on pages 10-13.

Professor Teivainen awarded by the OVET-project

Professor Teivo Teivainen (World Politics, University of Helsinki) has received an award for his insightful proposal of bringing the cyrrillic alphabet into the Finnish curriculum. "By this simple, yet effective, move we could open doors to Russia and Russian language for the young generation", said project leader Iiris Virtasalo when she handed the award at the final conference of the OVET project, Valloita Venäjä asiantuntemuksella taking place in Helsinki on October 7th 2013.

The symposium focuses on the work of late Marx on Russia and his contacts with Russian scholars and revolutionaries, with a special focus on Marx's economic  and the new materials to be published in the MEGA. An International Symposium at the Finland House in St.Petersburg, Russia

The Aleksanteri Institute organised a multidisciplinary course “Post-socialist Society and Culture” in the Helsinki Summer School in August 2013. The course examined the social and cultural change that has taken place in former socialist countries, Russia in particular, and focused on the challenges of post-Soviet modernisation.

Helsinki Summer School is a three-week academic event organised every August by University of Helsinki, Aalto University and Hanken School of Economics. This summer Helsinki Summer School is organised in 6-22 August 2013.

Cold War Helsinki Tram Tour was organised for the third time, this time in cooperation with the Student theatre Ylioppilasteatteri and Helsinki Region Transport (HSL). The two tram tours (at 11 am & 2.30 pm) were organised as part of an international congress of science journalists (WCSJ2013), and provided a fresh view on Finland’s intriguing recent past by incorporating latest research results with entertainment.

Dr. Katalin Miklóssy, senior researcher at the Aleksanteri Institute, is one of the 30 founding members who in January 2013 were nominated for the University of Helsinki’s Teachers’ Academy, a multidisciplinary network of highly distinguished teachers.

The board of the Aleksanteri Institute has nominated two Aleksanteri Associates for the period of  1.1.2013-31.12.2015.

Professor Emerita Natalia Baschmakoff (University of Eastern Finland) has had an active role at the Aleksanteri Institute from the beginning. She was a member of the graduate school board for over ten years and continues her strong influence in the academic community.

Dr. Aino Saarinen is one of the pioneers of gender studies in Finland. She’s a principal researcher at a project entitled RAGE: Hate Speech and Populist Othering in Europe Through the Racism, Age, Gender Looking Glass.
