Guest Lectures on Russian Law Enforcement, Economic Crime and the Police

On Thursday, October 22, two lectures on Russian law enforcement, economic crime, and the police will be organized jointly by the Aleksanteri Institute and the Department of Sociology at the University of Helsinki. The lectures will be held at the Aleksanteri Institute (Unioninkatu 33, 2nd floor, seminar room):

9.15-10.15: Dr. Gilles Favarel-Garrigues: "Policing economic crime in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia" (in English)

10.15-11.15 Dr. Boris Gladarev: "Institutionalnye usloviya i logika raboty militsii (na primere militsii obshchestvennoi bezopasnosti Peterburga)" (in Russian)

After the lectures an informal roundtable session will be organized (11.15-12.15), in which the Finnish researchers and specialists on Russian law enforcement may tell briefly about their own research interests and learn more about the studies of Favarel-Garrigues and Gladarev.

About the lecturers

Dr. Gilles Favarel-Garrigues (Centre for International Studies /SciencePo, Paris) is a specialist on law enforcement, police, and economic and organized crime, whose doctoral thesis in 2000 examined the fight against illegal economic activity in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia from 1965 to 1995. Currently Favarel-Garrigues is finishing a book in English concerning these themes.

Dr. Boris Gladarev is a researcher at the Center for Independent Social Research /European University, St. Petersburg. He is currently finishing a book in Russian about St. Petersburg police based on a recent research project.
